A-League Round Twelve Talking Points
It was a week of Derbies in the A-League with Melbourne Heart and Gold Coast pulling record crowds against their arch-rivals. Off the field Adelaide played its first match under new coach John Kosmina and Perth owner Tony Sage back flips on his decision to leave the club. So after a very entertaining week of A-League action here are the week twelve talking points.
Kosmina returns
After a turbulent past few weeks Adelaide fans would have been relieved to see their team draw with Sydney FC. The match marked the return of John Kosmina as coach and showed that Adelaide could still play competitive football.
The result was a good one however, the Reds have a long way to go and find themselves at the bottom of the ladder. The team has nothing to lose now, but pride and the board will no doubt be sweating it out as they wait for the club's imminent rise.
United's list is arguably as strong as any in the A-League and could be a real force in the future but fans are getting restless and need to see results now.
Kosmina may be the man to take the Reds to the finals, as a South Australian himself Kosmina has displayed the passion and intent required by any coach to lift his players and will undoubtedly work hard to turn the team's season around, but will the players get the message?
Nothing but a win next Friday will prove Adelaide still has what it takes, when it takes on the high flying Phoenix at Hindmarsh.
Perth's new year resolution
Perth has seen a less then successful A-League stint making finals only once despite the millions of dollars spent on player acquisitions.
However as of late Perth have seen a number of off-field dramas including falling crowds and the resignation of owner Tony Sage.
Sage was quick to withdraw his comments and has pledge his support behind the Glory however the cracks in Perth Glory are starting to show and it is clear that a number of people within the club are growing increasingly frustrated.
It is time for the team to unite and deliver results for their club, their owner and their fans. The possible resignation of Sage came as a shock to many however it may in fact spur on the team to deliver for the man that delivered for them.
2012 could see the Glory disappoint their fans again, and the players and coaching staff need to do everything they can to make sure it isn't.
A successful finals birth could reignite the Glory and begin a new era for the club reminiscent of their successful NSL days.
M1 Derby
It was the second derby of the week and in all fairness felt second rate as well.
The M1 saw Gold Coast and the ailing Brisbane clash in a desperate encounter both sides needed to win.
In a scrappy and frustrating game the Gold Coast took the points with a late (and controversial) penalty.
A healthier Gold Coast crowd of nearly 7,000 watched the matched however many reports suggest that this figure could have been substantially more if Gold Coast had prepared their ticketing system properly.
In what was an underwhelming day for Australian Football on many levels one must accept not all derbies will live up to expectations and in fact the larger crowd, and high levels of passion on and off the field was a testament to the fans and clubs, showing that the M1 rivalry is very much alive.
